Please Pray for My Friend!

This is my friend Courtney. She is an amazing person and is fighting every day to get stronger after getting attacked working a side job. She has tried to keep the streets of Athens GA safe since 1998.

An Athens-Clarke police officer remained in critical condition at St. Mary's Hospital on Wednesday night after a man attacked her at Kroger on Alps Road Tuesday, repeatedly stabbing the officer with a kitchen knife until customers intervened.

Sgt. Courtney Gale lost a massive amount of blood, and surgeons operated Tuesday night and three more times Wednesday, according to police.

The 9:30 p.m. attack started when the off-duty officer confronted a suspicious man while working security at the West Athens supermarket, Athens-Clarke police said.

An officer tackled the knife-wielding assailant as he ran through a West Broad Street parking lot about a half mile from the crime scene, according to police.

Steven Anthony Eberhart, 44, of 78 Parkview Homes, was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault and felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, police said. He is held without bond at the Clarke County Jail.

Officers converged on the hospital and kept vigil.

"Courtney is highly respected and loved very much - she's family," Athens-Clarke police Detective Kim Johnson said as she left the hospital Wednesday.

Gale graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in animal science, but joined the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in 1998. She was promoted to sergeant in 2005, and is a supervisor with the Criminal Investigation Division's robbery/homicide squad.

She was working a side job at Kroger when an employee told her about a man who was acting strangely, pushing a shopping cart filled with suitcases and opening packages of meat, according to police.

Gale was walking toward Eberhart when he lunged, knocked her down, pinned her to the ground and started to stab her, witnesses said.

"It looked like he was trying to keep her from going for her gun or mace," said one witness, Jeffrey Stovall, a UGA student.

Stovall and his roommate, Andrew Stipe, were about 15 feet away, standing in a checkout line. They thought they were witnessing a murder.

"She turned real pale and there was so much blood, it looked like she was about to die," Stipe said. "I had to turn away."

Other customers kicked at Eberhart to make him stop, but Eberhart didn't run from the store until the manager intervened.

"As soon as I put my hand on him. he turned around and tried to stab me," manager John Mobley said. "I ran to tell someone to call 911 to report an officer's down and she's hurt real bad, and as I came right back, he got off her and ran out the door."

Even before 911 calls came in, police dispatchers knew an officer was in trouble because Gale managed to push an emergency button on her radio, police said.

A nurse who was shopping at the time probably saved Gale's life by providing immediate aid, according to police.

"That, and the fact she was so close to the hospital," Athens-Clarke police Maj. Carter Green said, referring to St. Mary's Hospital, which is only a few hundred yards away.

The nurse took charge, telling shoppers and employees what first aid supplies to get from store shelves and asking Mobley to use his belt as a tourniquet for Gale, Mobley said.

"She was keeping pressure on to slow the bleeding and telling us to get gauze and other supplies," the manager said. "To me, there were four to five people who really were the heroes of this whole thing."

The weapon was a kitchen knife Eberhart stole from Kroger, police said.

"It was a major knife," said Stipe, who attends Gainesville State College.

Stovall called 911 from his car and helped police follow the attacker as he ran, crossing Alps Road and into the Colonial Promenade Beechwood shopping center then toward an adjoining apartment complex.

An officer tackled Eberhart as he ran in the parking lot of The Omni Club nearby, police said.

Dozens of people concerned about Gale's condition - from detectives and uniformed officers to Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents and Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Ken Mauldin - visited the hospital Tuesday and Wednesday.

"We just want to be here for her and give her whatever she needs," Johnson said. "It's a sad, sad day, but Courtney's a real fighter and we know she's going to pull through."

The wounded officer's mother and sister flew from their home in Maryland to be at Gale's bedside.

Police Chief Jack Lumpkin said the assault shows how officers put their lives on the line each day.

"Sgt. Gale is an outstanding police officer and has a record of accomplishments with the police department," Lumpkin said. "The attack on her is a demonstration of the complexities and dangers that are associated with a police officer's job in Athens-Clarke County where, unfortunately, wanton and vicious attacks occur on our officers too frequently."

Anyone wanting to help defray Gale's medical expenses can donate at any SunTrust Bank branch or send donations to SunTrust Bank, Attention: Heidi Spratlin, 1022 Prince Ave., Athens, GA 30606.

Our Project

The S's and B's did a project that included Time4Learning. Barns & Noble has this program where they let organizations wrap gifts free of charge. The group gets tips and for us it was about community service for our boys.

It is amazing how well the boys are doing in Time4Learning! Not a day goes by that they don't reference something to do with their Math, English, Science or Social Studies! It comes up in the oddest ways and every time I hear "I read about it on Time4Learning", I am thrilled.

The boys and I took a trip to Florida to tile my grandmother's Florida room. First was the process of laying out the tiles and figuring out the best way to lay them out so that the room came out even and it looked good. This week Zach was doing his math and came across the "tile" lesson. he was overjoyed at the thought that he knew exactly what they were talking about because he had just laid out the real tiles with me in Florida not so long ago! I love when real life lessons come full circle into something that they read on Time4Learning!

Another example of real life events being related to what they read is when their father was in an accident not so long ago. Seat belts and air bags saved him from being really hurt when he rolled his car. A few days later Q made a comment about reading about Time4Learning! It is great when the actually carry with them what they read about and study about!

A friend in Need

This is a friend of mine and she needs everyone to pray for her. Keep her in your thoughts today and please thank a law enforcement officer today for what they do to keep you safe.

ATHENS, Ga. --

An Athens-Clarke County police officer working off-duty at a Kroger was viciously attacked by a man with a butcher knife, police say.

Officials say Sgt. Courtney Gale was working off-duty in uniform at a Kroger grocery store on Alps Road in Athens Tuesday night when someone told her about a suspicious man who was opening meat in one of the store?s aisles.

Gale approached the man and authorities said he ?wantonly and viciously? attacked her with a butcher knife they believe he stole from the store.

Officials said Gale received numerous stab wounds and hospital officials said her injuries are serious.

Other citizens in the store were able to help the officer and subdue the suspect. Athens-Clarke County officials said after a brief foot chase, they arrested Steven Anthony Eberhart, 44. He has been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, felony obstruction and misdemeanor obstruction.

Channel 2 has learned the officer?s family is coming from out of town to be with her at the hospital.

An account has been set up for the officer at SunTrust Bank. Anyone interested in making a donation to this account may do so at any SunTrust branch or mail to SunTrust Bank, Attention: Heidi Spratlin, 1022 Prince Ave, Athens, Georgia, 30606.

Happy Thanksgiving!

"Thanksgiving puts steel into our patriotic veins.
It reminds us or our great heritage.
It carries us back with numbing nostalgia to that
first dreadful winter at Plymouth where less than
half the handful of people survived.
It speaks in clear, crisp tones of forgotten terms, like:
integrity...bravery...
respect...faith...vigilance...dignity...honor...
freedom...discipline...sacrifice...godliness."

Doing Science with Dad!

The boys have been waiting for the opportunity to do a science project with Scott. Since all three boys do T4L we picked today to do the mentos in the coke project.... B spent the night and he was excited to see the reaction of mentos and diet coke as well....

Jeffery stopped by and when he heard we were going to do it he stuck around until scott got home.

The boys gathered the materials and we did several test runs with some soda that was way past the date.... Then we did the Diet Coke one.... It was cool.

After it was over Scott called the boys over to "look" inside and Q rushed over, when Q bent down Scott yelled "boo!" really loud and I managed to get the photo! It was really funny!

Lady Bugs ~~~ this post is for Scott

Fall is here...... We have had some cooler days followed by some really warm ones now. Each year this happens. Lady Bugs invade our home. They come in through the walls it seems. Mom has been dealing with them and just about anyone you talk to is bothered by them......

When I got home from the gym yesterday and got ready to go to Cub Scouts the camera was charged which confused me because I had it charging for the meeting. Scott said, "oh I took photos of the Lady Bugs because I was sure you were going to blog about it..." Har har honey.... Here is your post.....

We don't get much color here but we had to go into the woods to cut some sticks for a "talking stick" project for cub scouts. Dad suggested that we use real cedar sticks rather than store bought dowels that I was going to use.... How cleaver and actually was a great idea.. Someday the boys will reflect back and see that we did things special for them, not everything needs to come in a kit and projects are more fun when you gather materials rather than buying them....

The boys helped clean off the sticks, Quentin gathered them with Dad (they were for his den) and it was fun and easy to do with dad's help!

Study of Lady Bugs, not by choice....

We are currently studying lady bugs and it is not by my choice. Lady bugs have taken over my house. It happens every year and it drives me nuts. We have some cold days and a few warm ones hit and the lady bugs take over.

The boys are learning about lady bugs, collecting them and showing them off. They walk around with them on their shirts and in their hair after being outside. You can see them flying all around and they seem to get in the house through the walls.

I vacuum them up, the boys yell... it is a vicious circle that drives us all crazy....

Oh well... nature projects at their best... they have googled the bugs and learned all about them.... For now I will have to tolerate them but the boys are having a great time with them.

Schooling review......

We are at the 3 month mark now. I was laying with my oldest son the night before last and we were going over the "agenda" for the following day. It is something that we have done since about the time he could talk. He has never been one for any kind of surprises but we have to be careful not to give to much detail in case something happens and we are unable to do something he has been looking forward to. We also have to keep our "agenda" discussion to no more than 3 or 4 things because he tends to over think things. Occasionally he gets in "trip mode" (A term my husband came up for me shortly after we got married; it means that no sleep and hyper-activity is looming overhead)
So, he and I were discussing our next days agenda and I listed what we were going to do. (he has also always had to know what everyone around him was doing or planning on doing) I discussed briefly that his grandfather would be leaving for Washington DC at the end of the week for Veterans day. (something that he has done for the past 5 years or so) and that Q's grandmother might be going along this year and continuing on to CT to see about her sick father.
Then I talked about me having to write most all day on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and me working out every afternoon at the gym. The boys father was working all week like normal and they would have Karate on Monday and Cub Scouts on Tuesday.
That was about all he could take and then I threw in, " Of course there will be school work every day". Prior to Time4Learning that comment would be met with a moan. We are now into our school year with using Time4Learning and the boys are doing great! Zachary just finished up part of his language arts and moved from 2nd grade to 3rd grade. We are pushing Q to get through 3rd grade work and get more into his 4th grade work but I have noticed a HUGE difference in his reading. Retention has never been an issue with either boys. Math is a strong subject for Q but I have noticed that Z is finding more and more enjoyment out of learning new math concepts.
Q and I chatted about Time4Learning and he told me that he was "actually really enjoying it". He did say that he liked not having the pressure of doing a million boring problems and that he was glad that we started using it.
When I asked Z what he enjoyed about it he said that he loved the poems and he liked that he could see his scores right away.
We really are thrilled with T4L this year. I have gotten to know some great people and have been involved with the company on a level that is so great to me. I found myself the other night talking to two moms about the curriculum for their public school kids who are having issues. I am enjoying being part of a network where there is support that I had no idea about. These three months have truly been an improvement in our home schooling lives.

I love this!

I worry all the time about colleges. What will we do in High School? Middle School? This was a comforting article to read, it is about Stanford
It is nice to know that we will have options. I did not like to read that HS students applying at GT had to take the satii tests 6 times.. That seems a bit excessive.....
We have time, but it goes by so fast, I worry...

Moving Forward with so many things

It is amazing how stress free my life is now. Seriously. Not financially, that part will never be stress free but emotionally it is. I am not feeling well today. I have a cold (as does my husband) we know we got it from the 40 degree weather this past weekend on our first official cub scout weekend camping trip. It was cold for us and although it was warm during the day, as soon as the sun dropped it turned very chilly.
So, not feeling well and normally the boys would trounce on that opportunity to run all over me. I don't often get sick but sometimes I get busy etc.. they take full advantage of that. I was surprised that after breakfast was over they both moved to their computers and signed on to do their lessons without even a nudge.
I usually look at the time when I see that they begin. Depending on how they are doing with their lessons it can take them anywhere from an hour to two. It also depends on how stubborn my 6 year old is. My oldest son usually "reads" some of his younger brother's assignments and tests with him which does not bother me in the least. Truthfully the 6 year old is so far ahead that I see him passing his brother at some point which will bring on a whole new set of problems between the two boys. For now I am happy that they can "share" in their assignments and for right now it is review for the 9 year old so I look at it as a positive thing.
Hopefully tomorrow I will feel better but if I don't, it will be interesting to see how they do with their schoolwork. Thankfully we all love their curriculum and that helps make life so much easier..... Now where did I put those attendance sheets that I need to fill in???? goodness at my forgetfulness....

We Use Time4Learning!

Time4Learning is a very popular phrase in our home. We began using it almost 3 months ago and I think that all my reasons for using an online curriculum have completely gone out the window.

My boys enjoy every bit of their school work.... Well, in comparison they do.... They still balk at quizzes and tests, they still complain about the "writing" that they are required to do, but overall our house is so much better this year. We truly found a winner and will encourage everyone to try it out.

Life is funny..... Never would I think that my two boys would ever discuss school work, lessons and things that they have learned so intently as they do now. Riding in the car is fun when a subject comes up that they learned. They could be discussing the latest science project or place they want to visit that they read about in social studies. Both get so into talking about the subject and I find it amusing when/if they disagree with one another for some reason, by the time we get home they are signing on to see who was correct with a fact.

We have really enjoyed the last couple months and this year truly is the best so far!

I will be posting more about T4L as this blog progresses but if you have any questions about it, sign on to Time4Learning and have your child try out the Lesson Demos! It really convinced us and when my boys were done they were begging for more!

Welcome to our little world..

Our little world is made up of a whole lot of family.... A few animals and a great deal of love.... Welcome to my homeschooling blog and the story that just keeps getting better......

We began homeschooling when my oldest son, now 9, was just 3 years old. The day he came home from the hospital I knew that there was no way to go back to work. When he was born I cried, I knew that this little boy was the love of my life and that he had my heart from the moment I laid eyes on him. He was amazing to watch and is wonderful to have around. You really can't get enough of him.

When he was almost 3 he helped us welcome his brother to the world. He watched him minutes after he was born and just about saw him before I did. He stood at the window and waited to see his brother for the first time. When his brother came home with me from the hospital there was never an adjustment, his brother demanded every bit of love and attention that he could get and fit in like he had always been there..... The two boys share little moments that I love to see and I can't get enough of those times when they are so at peace with each other and quietly doing something or involved so deeply with one another that no outside influence can break it.

My two boys... They are so different in every way. They compliment each other in life but it is really amazing that they have the same parents, one getting the strengths the other lacks. The each pull at your heart and make you love them from the moment you meet them.
Even the way they go to bed and get up in the morning is so very different, one never sleeping and the other falling fast asleep, one waking cheerful and loving and one like me; unable to even speak or acknowledge the world around him!

One is musical, the other is an artist... One excelling in Math, the other in English... One shy, the other outgoing... One you can't stop, the other cautious of the world....

Those are my boys.... Loving and wonderful and making our family come together.
